Safe and Sober - Strong Mob

The Safe and Sober support program funded under the Alice Springs Transformation Plan is helping people to tackle alcohol issues and to make good life choices.

There are many reasons people turn to the program for help and as the following quotes from participants show, the program is delivering results.

"The Safe and Sober Program has really helped me. I used to drink nearly every day. I started getting sick because I was drinking a lot and started having a lot of problems with my family because of the grog, but this program has helped me slow down."

"My Aunty was always trying to help me by taking me out bush, and trying to get me and my cousins on the right track, but I would just run back to town again."

"A Congress staff member used to come and see me all the time, she used to help me and I said we really need a support program to get us women together and take us out bush to talk about alcohol problems and that is when this program come about."

"We go out bush every fortnight, and I don’t miss out on the trip. We really enjoy getting away from grog and going out bush to sit down and talk about our health and problems with alcohol. We learn from each other and tell our stories."

"We only had about six women at the start but now the group has grown, we share our problems with each other and go back home and talk to other ladies. I don’t get shame to talk about grog, because I know grog will be killing us. My Aunty is happy that I have slowed down."

The Safe and Sober Program is a multi-disciplinary alcohol rehabilitation service, offering social support, advocacy and structured therapy. The program is run by Congress’s Social Emotional and Wellbeing Branch.

Under the program clients are assigned to a therapist and Aboriginal Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) worker who offer case coordination/management, therapeutic intervention, culturally appropriate support, social support and advocacy, access to medical care and appropriate group work with flexibility in style and locations to ensure accessibility. The program also delivers a prison in-reach program with other local AOD service providers and is offered to both men and women.
