Dog Management
Since October 2009, the Alice Springs Transformation Plan has invested more than $500,000 to improve and standardise dog ownership in Alice Springs town camps. This funding has enabled the Alice Springs Town Council to employ a qualified vet ranger as part of a dedicated team to deliver a number of animal management services as part of the Dog Control Program such as surgical de-sexing.
"More than 100 dogs have been microchipped and registered through the Dog Control Program, which shows a stabilisation in dog numbers on town camps," said Alice Springs Town Council Ranger Unit Manager, Kevin Everett.
"We talk to residents about dog health issues, and remind people about their obligations and responsibilities as dog owners, and why it’s better to get your dog registered."
"You can see the difference with the dogs – there’s far less mange, far less aggression from the dogs, fewer litters of puppies and fewer cheeky dogs. Overall the dogs are happier and healthier."
"In the initial phase the Dog Control Program’s aim was to dramatically reduce the number of dogs at large in town camps. But the Ranger Team has since worked solidly with residents on dog owner education and the enforcement of the Alice Springs Town Council Animal Management requirements, limiting the number of dogs owned to two-dogs per household, and making sure dogs are registered and micro-chipped," said Mr Everett.
