Thumbs up for Apmere Mwerre Visitor Park
More than 100 people gathered to celebrate the opening of the Apmere Mwerre Visitor Park in Alice Springs.
The new park was officially opened on 2 February by the Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, the Northern Territory Chief Minister, Paul Henderson, and the Minister for Central Australia, Karl Hampton.
Ms Macklin said the Apmere Mwerre Visitor Park would provide a safe and affordable place for visitors to Alice Springs to stay.
Apmere Mwerre, meaning "good place", is the Arrernte name for the new visitor park at 15 Len Kittle Drive in Alice Springs, near the show grounds.
The park is managed by Aboriginal Hostels Limited.
The new park contains a mix of self-contained units, cabins and camping facilities, offering a range of short-term accommodation options for up to 150 people.
The park will provide accommodation options for many people who travel from remote communities to visit family, go shopping, attend sporting events or festivals, and to access government and non-government services.
Accommodation will be available for family groups, couples and single people. Visitors are able to enjoy healthy meals from the Park Dining Room, or can use the BBQ cooking facilities and prepare their own meals.
The new park will be supported by a regular public bus service.
The park is an alcohol- and drug-free zone, offering visitors a safe and secure environment.
